Board of Faculty Advisors By-Laws

Name
The name of this organization shall be “American Heritage Center Board of Faculty Advisors (BFA)”

Purpose
The purpose of the BFA is to provide advice and support for the Director of the American Heritage Center to achieve the following goals:

  1. Continue to increase the significance of the AHC as a resource for the community of students and scholars at the UW and beyond;
  2. Identify and inform AHC faculty and staff of potential acquisitions that enhance AHC holdings of special distinction;
  3. Facilitate the improvement and expansion of AHC programs providing scholarship and outreach activities;
  4. Ffurther integrate AHC into the intellectual life of faculty and students across the University.

Committee members shall exercise the following additional functions: assist with planning the AHC’s annual history symposium and other outreach activities; consult in such program and policy decisions as may be required from time to time by the director; provide advice and assistance to the Director in advancing the mission of the AHC; provide assistance in interviewing candidates for faculty and administrative positions at the AHC.

Membership and Terms
Membership in the BFA will consist of six to ten tenured or tenure-track faculty members appointed by the President of the University of Wyoming, and seven ex-officio members. Faculty members appointed by the President will be chosen to reflect a wide range of disciplines, and will serve terms of three years, with no more than two terms served consecutively. Terms will begin at the start of the academic year.

Of the seven ex-officio members, five will be voting members, eligible to hold the position of chair: Vice President for Academic Affairs, Chair of the American Studies department, Chair of the Women’s Studies department, Chair of the History Department, Dean of the UW Libraries. Two of the ex-officio members are non-voting and ineligible to serve as chair: Director of the American Heritage Center and Associate Director of the American Heritage Center.

Because faculty on temporary appointments may also have the ability to significantly contribute to the purpose of the BFA, the chair and the AHC director may extend an ad hoc appointment to one non-tenure track faculty member in any given academic year, with the consent of the faculty member’s department chair. Such an ad hoc appointee may vote, but is not eligible to serve as chair.

Officers
The BFA will elect one of its members to serve as chair and the director of the American Heritage Center shall serve as secretary to prepare minutes of all meetings of the body. Chairs will be elected to two-year terms. Normally a chair will serve only one term consecutively; however, one additional consecutive term is possible under special circumstances.

Meetings
The Board typically shall meet two times each semester.

Quorum
A simple majority of the board shall constitute a quorum.

Amendments
These by-laws may be amended and additional by-laws adopted at any meeting of the BFA by vote of a majority of the members at a meeting, a quorum being present.

Revised, 10 October 2003.
Revised, 13 December 2004
