Alan Simpson - is the winner in the Government Category.
A Wyoming native from one of the state’s most prominent political
families, he was elected to the Wyoming House of Representatives as a
Republican in 1964, where he served as majority whip and later majority
floor leader. In 1977 he became speaker of the Wyoming House of Representatives.
Simpson entered the national political arena
in 1978, successfully running for the United States Senate. He quickly
became recognized for his quick wit and sharp criticisms, establishing
a reputation as an effective speaker, a hard worker, and a skillful legislator.
From 1985 to 1987 Simpson served as assistant majority leader, assuming
the position of assistant minority leader in 1987. Simpson retired from
the Senate in 1997.
Thurman Arnold - best known for his work as a "trust
buster" during the Roosevelt administration, he was a law professor,
author, assistant attorney general, and appeals court judge.
Fred
Blume - appointed to the Wyoming Supreme Court in 1921, he served
as a justice for more than forty years, and was chief justice for seventeen
years.
Dick
Cheney - U.S Representative from 1979 - 1989, he served as Secretary
of Defense in the Bush administration and presided over Operation Desert
Storm.
Cliff
Hansen - elected governor of the state of Wyoming in 1962, he
served two terms in the United States Senate (1967-1979).
Ed
Herschler - one of the most popular governors in the state’s
history, Herschler was elected to an unprecedented three terms (1974 -
1986).
John
Kendrick - first Democrat elected governor in Wyoming (1914),
he served three terms in the U.S. Senate (1917 - 1933).
Joseph
O’Mahoney - as U.S. Senator for twenty-four years, he became
a prominent supporter of economic opportunity during the New Deal.
Nellie
Tayloe Ross - the first, and to date only, woman elected governor
of Wyoming, she was also the first woman to hold the position of Director
of the U.S. Mint.
F.E. Warren - served as a U.S. Senator thirty-seven years.
Throughout his long career he promoted the development of Wyoming and
the protection of the state’s interests.
