Dwight T. Pitcaithley lecture, "Historic Sites as
Public Forums: The National Park Service
as an Educational Institution" explored the changing role of
the National Park Service
in today's society, as it reflects both Congressional intent and an
expanded concept of collective memory. He discussed the history of
historic sites as educational institutions and the evolving nature
of the preservation and interpretation of our most cherished national

lecture examined the role of history in a democratic society and the necessary
and inherent relationship between public places and historical scholarship.
Dr. Pitcaithley's lecture was held Thursday, April 13, 2000 at
4:00 pm, in the Stock Grower's Room of the American
Heritage Center.
