Coat Couture XI Art to Wear

The Coat Couture XI collection features work created by students in FCSC 4178/5178 Fiber Arts, part of the Apparel Design minor in the UW Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Students can register for either undergraduate or graduate credit. Throughout the semester students had the opportunity to learn a variety of textile embellishment techniques, including painting and dyeing of fabrics, three-dimensional manipulations and beading. Each student was required to design and create a lined wearable art jacket incorporating a minimum of four techniques learned in class. Those registered for graduate credit were required to complete a coordinating garment to be exhibited with their jacket.

The exhibit is currently on display at the American Heritage Center until August 27, 2009. Below are a few of the garments featured in the exhibit:

Fabric: Unknown blend.

Techniques: Twin needle stitching, machine embroidery, beading, couching, blooming.

Insight to the Hmong

"This semester I have been learning about textiles of the Eastern world and personally further researched the Hmong hill tribes of Vietnam, Laos, and Thailand. The inspiration for my jacket came from the intricate designs created by the women of these tribes. I wanted to incorporate their distinctive look of dress with my own style. Although my work hardly compares to the talents of the hill tribe women, I hope that in some way it represents the immaculate creations and symbolizes the uniqueness of their culture."

Amanda Jenkins

Fabric: 100 percent cotton denim, silk lining.

Techniques: Silk water color dye, pleating, twin needle stitching, and hand beading.

Sapphire and Emerald

"The inspiration for this coat came from my love of bright colors paired with dark blue denim. I wanted something that would be unique without being extreme. I enjoyed the freedom to be very expressive with the lining and pull those bright colors through with stitching and beading onto the exterior, allowing the outside to be decorative while still maintaining the denim look."

Rita Palm

Fabric: Silk/cotton satin, silk chiffon, fleece underlining, canvas.

Techniques: Couching, twin needle stitching, rosette flower, machine embroidery, covered buttons, beading.

Get Me To The Church On Time

"While deciding on what type of jacket to design I realized that for once in my life, I will not need multiple layers of warmth to survive the winter. In fact, I will not need a jacket at all after I say, “I do” and move to Arizona with my husband to be! I wanted to make something special to wear on my wedding day without the stress of constructing the dress, so this bolero was a perfect fit. The jacket incorporates symbolic designs in the embroidery and couching, such as the pattern on my engagement ring and the flower on my dress."

Chelsey Byrd

Fabric: Denim, 100 percent cotton.

Techniques: Machine embroidery, fabric marbling, fabric painting, twin needle stitching, heat set crystals.

Chasin' Dreams

"Blue jeans and a little bit of bling and I’m off to the rodeo or a night on the town! I’m just a simple country girl whose dreams have always centered on country living and rodeo. Being a cowgirl all my life I’ve learned that using what is available and making it do is part of life and I approached this project with the same mentality. I cut up old jeans that had seen plenty of hard work and rodeos and used them for the majority of my jacket. You’ll see me wearing this jacket the next time I’m out chasin’ my dreams – gold buckles or cowboys."

Erin Smith

Fabric: 100 percent cotton muslin.

Techniques: Machine dyeing, fabric painting, oil paint stick rubbings, piping.

Simply Floral

"In my garment, a single stylized gardenia motif repeats and blooms into an entire garden. The colors come from Wyoming’s great expanse of blue sky, and the multi-colored gardens and greenery of Laramie during the summer season. The inspiration for this piece began with my own challenge to explore fabric decoration and large-scale design, rather than my usual focus on many smaller details. Working with these “big picture” concepts was much different from anything I had previously attempted and was a challenging and rewarding experience."

Ginny Kilander

Fabric: Jacket--100 percent cotton denim, 100 percent hand dyed Kona cotton, tulle, eyelash and chenille fiber trims. Skirt--100 percent cotton denim, 100 percent hand dyed Kona cotton.

Techniques: Pin tucks, pleating, three-dimensional tucks, spontaneous couching, wet and wrinkled, quilting crumbs, machine embroidery.

Letting My Colors Show

" As I reflect on this new chapter of life, I become aware of how my creativity has been kept to myself and immediate family, but not shared with the rest of the world. This coat reflects the new process of sharing my interior colors, passion and creativity with the outside world. My inner world is filled with color, love, joy and inspirational words from Wayne Dyer, Eckhart Tolle and others. Starting now they are emerging into the exterior world by sharing more of me."
