Fabric Painting and Marbeling is a fun way to liven up fabric. Fabric painting involves brushing the material with paint or dye. Dyes move across the fabric blending colors and creating a beautiful, original fabric. Fabric marbeling involves floating dye on the surface of a gel-like medium. The dye is then pulled across the surface, creating an interesting pattern in the gel. Fabric is then laid on top of the surface, absorbing the dye, leaving the pattern behind on the fabric. These techniques take fabric from the ordinary to the extra-ordinary.

Simply Exquisite

"I wanted my jacket to be something special, exciting, one of a kind and yet still be identifiable with my personality when I wore it. I feel that this loose fitting jacket is simple while at the same time exquisite. It can be worn anywhere, but it works best if worn in the late afternoon or evening. When I saw the black wrinkled velvet, I knew that I wanted to use it to create my jacket. I used several embellishments and trims to spice up this jacket and set it apart from anything that could be bought commercially."

Passion

"The colors that I used in my project are inspired by my love of jewel tones. My jacket includes a number of techniques to create an elegant pattern scheme, while remaining simple and uncluttered. I have always enjoyed a bit of jeweled shimmer and my project portrays this portion of my personality. The beading and the metallic threads create a bit of shimmer in the deep purple silk. This jacket will be lovely for me to wear for a night on the town. I will certainly shine when I wear this jacket."

Northern Lights in Western Nights

"I enjoy wearing unusual denim garments and expressive colors. I needed a special outfit for the Cattle Baron’s Ball and I came up with the idea of combining denim and hand-painted silk. The hand-painted silk lining and embellished western yoke has variation and movement in colors that remind me of the Northern Lights. I remember them as vivid and flowing colors accented by the pure darkness of the unpolluted Alaskan night sky. This piece combines the deep darkness of Wyoming nights and the brilliance and fluidity of the Northern Lights."

Life of the Party

"My inspiration for this jacket came from a jacket that Dr. Donna Brown created. The world of color is fascinating to me, with many different hues; and I have always liked to play with color. In my project, the bold royal blue stands out and makes a statement. My Mum has also helped me in making decisions related to this jacket. She loves the colors that I implemented in this project. These particular colors bring out her "natural glow" and hide all the unwanted areas. Many have said that we are alike in both style and coloring."

Jewel Tones

"The inspiration for this project came from the jewel-tones in this wool fabric. I further enhanced this jeweled look with a variety of satins in matching jewel colors. My goal for this project is to create a blazer that goes beyond the ordinary that I can still wear to work. Significant wearable art detailing enhances the breast pocket, lapel and back yoke turning this basic, classic style into a wearable piece of art."
