Coat Couture Collection Virtual Exhibit

The flat surface of a fabric can be manipulated to create a three-dimensional surface, stitching and slashing, pleating, and wrinkling are all examples of ways to create a new look for the fabric. Texture can be further enhanced by the use of decorative threads, years and ribbons on the surface.

Profusion of Butterflies

"Being a confirmed fabricaholic, when I saw the black fabric embossed with butterflies, I simply could not leave the store without purchasing some. It is exactly the kind of fabric to use to create something special for a fiber arts project. I choose the butterfly theme because for me, butterflies have been a favorite expression of life and beauty. Besides sewing techniques, I incorporating tatting into my jacket. I taught myself how to tat and wanted to include this difficult needle art into my project, hence the tatted butterflies."

Celestial Technicolor

"The inspiration for this piece came from my desire to create a whimsical and daring coat. The whirling stars and bright colors are playful and attract attention. Rainbows are incorporated into my piece because I feel that they are a symbol of change and renewal. As graduation approaches, my life is moving in a new direction. The coat combines both the sharpness of the stars and pinked edges and the smoothness of the oval cutouts. This dichotomy is reflective of my own personality. I am as diverse as the colors of the rainbow."

Independence for Mom

"I created this jacket for my Mom for her birthday. I chose this pattern because I thought it would look good on her and she would be able to wear it to work. We went to the fabric store and picked the fabrics together. She is a "winter" person meaning that primary colors, such as those used in this project, look good on her. The colors are very versatile and can be worn with almost anything in her closet. My Mom looked through my book of technique samples that I had and chose the manipulations used in the jacket. This will be a gift that my Mom can treasure for years to come."

Country Casual

"I am from a farm background and have spent most of my life in jeans, T-shirts, and casual wear. Even though I have become a city girl in recent years, my attire has remained the same. I created a coat that will fit my lifestyle. The rows and rows of light beige lines on my jacket remind me of the fields of wheat, corn and cotton at harvest time that my husband and I raised through the years. The coat is lined with silk that I hand painted in blues and browns representing the earth and sky. The print fabric that I chose looks like small fences stretching across the fabric at right angles to each other."
