Lakeport, near New Orleans
Watercolors on paper by Thomas Kennet-Were

“The railroad to New Orleans runs through a swamp, and for a part of the way we were obliged to follow some cows, which, preferring the hard track to the marshy ground, quietly trotted on in front of the engine, although the driver blew his whistle until the very brass must have been sore. . . .

None of the hotels in the city are good, so strangers usually take lodgings, and live at the restaurants, which are well managed and numerous. New Orleans is a much finer city than I had expected after what I had seen of other Southern towns. Canal street is certainly the widest, and perhaps the handsomest street I saw in any American city.”
