“Buffalo is so called from the French word ‘Buffle,’
a name given to it by its first discoverers from the herds of wild oxen
which they saw in the neighbourhood. It is prettily situated on Lake Erie,
close to the confluence of the Niagara river. I was surprised to see a
very strong breakwater built out into the water opposite to the entrance
of the harbour, which showed signs of the storms that at times rage furiously
on the lake. In this large ships were lying, which remembering that Buffalo
is 500 miles from the sea, give a forcible idea of the vastness of these
inland seas.”

“Our old friend, the Genesee river meets us here
again, and is busily employed in producing waterfalls, of which there
are three. The railway bridge crosses it a little below the town.
This bridge, entirely of wood, is a wonderful construction, and is
made in such a manner that any piece of timber can be removed and
another substituted, without interfering with the general strength.”
