However, cataloged collections exist in several levels of intellectual and physical control, of which researchers should be aware. Some collections are cataloged but not otherwise organized or described—in archival terms, they have no fuller finding aid. This can make some of these collections difficult to use, particularly from a distance; the alternative, though, would be that researchers would not know of the existence of the collection, and thus not be able to use it at all. Other collections have a range of arrangement and description. Some have rudimentary box or folder lists for only portions of the collection (this is due to the collections having arrived in several accessions). Some have basic box or folder lists for the entire collection. And some have been fully organized and described, with complete finding aids (some of these finding aids, in turn, are available on our web site). The catalog records for each collection will indicate the level or existence of lists or finding aids. f you have questions about the information you find on our catalog records, or about the level of intellectual or physical control of a particular collection, please contact our reference staff at ahcref@uwyo.edu or 307/766-3756.|
